Although the driving forces behind IP Multicast realized that reliability was an important problem, they also knew it could be solved.  They considered this "problem" less important than getting the basic building blocks in place.  As long as (udp) IP Multicast protocols were built into the interdomain routing infrastructure, they assumed that sooner or later somebody would solve the reliability issues.

The challenge is to add security and reliability to the IP Multicast model.  Ian A. Stewart  - World Multicast Inc. World Multicast China, Inc.

Not everyone is going to agree on just what happened to IP Multicast and its promise of mass media on the Internet, but one thing remains certain; IP Multicast is the only mass media technology present in the interdomain routing infrastructure; hence, the only way to create large-scale transmissions of television, radio, or data on the Internet is to use IP Multicast.

Terrestrial mass media structures really should be in place to make us less vulnerable to things like sunspots, nuclear detonations, or other calamities. Secure Reliable IP Multicast could provide a lifeline for all of us! Just as in the revolution of Internet itself, Internet based mass media could change the whole picture.

The challenge-- create a secure reliable framework that is open, scaleable, and based on the same kind of building blocks that make the Internet so amazingly reliable. Ian A. Stewart - World Multicast Inc. World Multicast China, Inc.
